ADPI is fortunate and very proud to have national and internationally trained professional staff who are totally committed to their role of developing dancers and musical theatre performers. All of our staff are valued, actively involved members of the industry (in their respective genres and fields) throughout the world. We are also proactive in inviting guest teachers / lecturers / choreographers in to work with the students when possible.

> Bill Pengelly : Head of Classical & Contemporary and Certificate III in Performing Arts Co-ordinator

Teaching Area:Classical Ballet, Pax de Deux and Contemporary Dance, Modern, Partnering & Repertoire

Born in Townsville, Bill began his training at the age of nine. In 1976, he became a member of the Qld Ballet and over the next four years performed the entire company repertoire including many principal roles. In 1980 Bill was invited to join Sydney Dance Company under the joint direction of Graeme Murphy and Janet Vernon. He performed in all seasons and travelled extensively both nationally and internationally.
During the sixteen years that he was with the company he also reproduced Murphy repertoire for companies such as Singapore Dance Theatre and West Australian Ballet. He also took on the role of Dance Master/Rehearsal Director as well as continuing to perform. In 1996, he was appointed Rehearsal Director of Bangarra Dance Theatre. He toured extensively with the company with major works Ochres and Fish and also assisted Stephen Page for the Handover Ceremony at the Atlanta Olympic Games. In 1997 Bill worked with Stephen for the initial season of Rites, a collaboration with Bangarra Dance Theatre & the Australian Ballet.

In 1998, Bill was appointed Acting Artistic Director for the West Australian Ballet in the absence of the Artistic Director, Ted Brandsen. He was also given the opportunity to choreograph his first work for the company, which led to an invitation to create a second work for them in their 1999 Quarry season. In 1999, he was appointed Artistic Director for Australian Dance Theatre. During this time he auditioned and created a new company as well as developing and choreographing for two major Adelaide seasons highlighting works by Australian Choreographers. The company also had the opportunity to collaborate with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

He choreographed the closing ceremony for the 2000 Sydney Paralympics and the Centenary of Federation ceremony in 2001.
From 2000 - 2005 he taught and choreographed at major ballet schools and dance institutions in Sydney and Brisbane. During this time he coached many of the finalists and winners of the McDonald Scholarship. In 2006 he rejoined Bangarra Dance Theatre. He worked on the third revival of Rites with The Australian Ballet and toured with Clan on its national tour and travelled to the UK with Bush. He left the company in 2009 to continue freelance teaching. In 2010 Bill completed his TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

> Jacqui Devereux (Head of Musical Theatre) : Singing & Musical Theatre

Teaching Area:Singing, Musical Theatre Practicum, Musical Theatre History

Versatile Mezzo soprano, Jacqui Devereux, has many stylistic strings to her bow and is accomplished and experienced in opera, musical theatre, recital, revue and cabaret work. Jacqui has appeared in numerous operatic, cabaret, corporate and contemporary performances due to the flexibility of her vocal style and performance abilities. She has also participated in recordings of new musicals Bolivar! and The Red Devil.
Since 1999, Jacqui has progressed into musical direction and in 2007, she started The Company, a highly successful professional pop vocal ensemble aimed at giving young up and coming singers their first professional vocal experience in corporate entertainment.
Jacqui has participated in and conducted master classes and vocal seminars throughout the country and is a highly sought after teacher of voice, particularly in Musical Theatre, her specialty. She teaches both adults and children, professionals and amateurs and a high percentage of her students have gained entry into highly prestigious tertiary courses majoring in contemporary singing and Musical Theatre.(WAAPA, Australian Institute of Music, Qld Con, QUT, & NIDA). A number of her past students now work in the performance industry, having been cast in professional musicals (Chicago, Adam's Family, Jersey Boys, Spamalot, High School Musical, My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, Hairspray, Rock Of Ages) and major theme parks (Universal Studios, Disney) and cruise lines (Carnival, P&O). Jacqui brings to her teaching of voice and her performance, not only a wealth of experience, knowledge and skill, but also a sense of humour and passion for her craft.

> Gareth Harris : Acting & Improvisation

Teaching Area: Improvisation, presentation, voice and acting coach

Gareth is a professional actor with a wealth of experience both in the UK (20 years) and in Australia following his arrival in 2005. Gareth trained at London’s Mountview Theatre School and holds a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment. He has worked with many high profile actors including Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman, Albert Finney, Nigel Havers, Stacey Keach and Richard Griffiths. His credits include Serge in London’s award winning production of “ART”; Antony in Royal National Theatre production of Antony & Cleopatra; Guest leads in The Bill, Casualty, Eastenders, Without Motive and The Bench; Gav in Crooked Business for Chris Nyst; Freddie Marshal in K9 for Metal Mutt Productions and speaking roles in numerous TVC in UK and Australia.

> Helena Moore : Jazz & Cabaret

Teaching Area: Jazz Technique & Cabaret

Helena Moore has an extraordinary background in dance, with a vast array of experience in television, stage musicals, commercials, conventions, gala openings and teaching. Whilst all the productions Helena has danced in are too numerous to mention, a small cross-section includes: The Farnham & Byrne Show, The Marcia Hines Show, The Two Ronnies, The Peter Allen Show, The Daryl Somers Show, The Mike Walsh Show, Expo ’88, The Opening of Sanctuary Cove with Frank Sinatra & Whitney Houston. Helena took a year off to travel through America and studied with the Alvin Ailey Company. On her return, she joined up with David Atkins’ company and was contracted for numerous stage shows, TV commercials and conventions, both in Australia an overseas. Helena was with the original ‘Electric Legs’ which became the stage musicals ‘Dancin’ Man’ and ‘Dynamite’ and has established her own successful production company, which for 6 years, concentrated on productions in Australia and Japan. The natural progression transpired from dancer to choreographer and she assisted Ross Coleman with his works in Thailand Musicals, The Australian fashion Awards, The Logies & the Jupiters Casino production on the Gold Coast and the opening of Southbank. Her most memorable job was assistant choreographer on a movie with a dog…Scooby Doo 1. Helena conducts master classes in Australia and overseas, teaches fulltime and is a freelance choreographer for Corporate Events & Hair Shows in Brisbane. Helena choreographed the stage shows Chicago & Grease for the Empire Theatre Toowoomba.

> Michael Edge : Jazz

Teaching Area: Musical Theatre Jazz, Jazz and choreographic works

Born in Sydney, NSW, Michael studied at the very prestigious Newtown High School of Performing Arts where he graduated and furthered his studies at Brent Street full time Performing Arts Course. Michael went on to have a successful career in stage and theatre, film and television, cruise ships and commercial work including conventions and modelling. He has worked with some of the industries best including Jacqui Howard, Jason Coleman, William Forsythe, Dein Perry and companies such as the Australian Ballet, P & O, Jacobsen Entertainment, Bazmark Inq and Channel 7. Career highlights include from stage - Shout “The Musical”; film – Moulin Rouge, Bootmen and Lantana; and television – All Saints, Always Greener and Home & Away’. Michael currently resides in Brisbane where his teaching and choreographic skills are in high demand.

> Summer Nelson : Jazz & Tap

Teaching Area: Jazz & Tap Technique

Summer was born in Queensland, studying dance from a young age in the RAD and ATOD syllabi. Reaching a high level in ballet, jazz and tap she then took her studies further graduating successfully from the Queensland Dance School of Excellence. Summer pursued her studies for a further two years at the Australian Dance Performance Institute and graduated with both an Advanced Diploma of Art (Musical Theatre) and her RAD Teaching Certificate. Summer also successfully completed a TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. As well as sitting students in their RAD ballet exams annually, Summer has pursued her love of jazz/modern technique and choreography, and has had extensive experience with young children right up to adults. She has been fortunate enough to work with the National Institute of Youth Performing Arts, coordinating 3 concerts a year at the QPAC concert hall and has also been involved in USA tours choreographing performances for Disneyland, California Adventure Land and Universal Studios.

> Aileen Brockett : Music

Teaching Area: Music Appreciation

Born and raised in country North Queensland, Aileen began playing the piano at the age of 6. Her range of instruments expanded over the following years to include woodwind and brass. Throughout her school years, Aileen competed very successfully in many local, regional and state competitions and as a senior high school student, auditioned successfully for a MOST (Musically Outstanding Student) Scholarship with Education Queensland.
Aileen moved to Brisbane to further her musical studies after being accepted into the School of Music at the University of Qld. During her university years she gained her AMusA, played in many ensembles, was an active member of the Music Student Society (Treasurer and President), assisted in setting up new initiatives such as the still current Music Students’ Guild Wind Performance Prize and joined the Qld University Regiment with a primary role as a musician and eventually taking over the role of conductor. Aileen graduated with an honours degree in a Bachelor of Music with education as well as being awarded one of the UQ School of Music prizes for her thesis.
After graduation, Aileen was employed by Education Qld where she spent the next 14 years teaching instrumental/classroom music and conducting bands in various schools around north Brisbane. While teaching, Aileen was still actively performing music in various community bands such as Qld Wind and Brass and Brisbane Brass, one of the state’s premier A grade brass bands in addition to taking on some professional gigs.
Aileen also taught privately, with many of her students gaining honours in AMEB exams as well as being accepted into tertiary institutes for music. She furthered her professional development by attending The Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago multiple times.
After going part-time to start and raise her family, Aileen took on consultant work at schools/music organisations running short courses/camps as well as adjudicating music sections in eisteddfods and competitions. Aileen is a registered teacher and commenced her current position of teaching Music Appreciation at ADPI at the beginning of 2012.

> Chris Jordan : Tap technique and Choreography

Teaching Area: Tap
Chris Jordan has been dancing since the age of 6 and trained in most styles of dance but became quite fond of TAP and started to work on his new found love.
Chris has performed both nationally and internationally with “Those Tap Guys” “Tap Dogs” and Raw Dance Companies, “Raw Metal” professional TAP groups, including Raw Dance Companies, “Project X” which he toured in Singapore and the Netherlands and “Those Tap Guys” performances at Taiwan’s Lantern Festival and National Day 2012.
Chris had the pleasure of performing in ‘THE BOY FROM OZ’ as “Young Peter Allen” in 1999, The 10th Anniversary Tour of ‘LES MISERABLES’ as “Gavroche” in 1999 and ‘JOLSON’ as “SAMMY” in 1999-2000.
Chris’s most recent musical theatre appearance was in Harvest Rain Theatre Company’s ‘HOT SHOE SHUFFLE’ where he played the youngest Tap Brother, “SLIDE.”
Throughout the years Chris has also appeared on various TV shows including The Shack, Totally Wild, Toasted TV, Sunrise and the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards.
Chris has dedicated most of his career to teaching tap technique/ choreography at various dance schools and performing arts schools throughout Australia. Most recently Chris was the Dance Master for Ipswich City Councils’ Dance Master Classes.
Chris has a passion for passing on his knowledge and sharing his love of dance with his students. His classes are usually filled with laughter as he believes that having fun creates the perfect learning environment.

> Rhys Humphreys : Conditioning & Stretching

Teaching Area: Conditioning
Was taught by Barbara Eversen and Brisbane Dance Centre from 13 years of age. He had many achievements when dancing such as Winner of the RAD Scholarship, Finalist McDonald Ballet Scholarship (Opera House), Finalist RAD Australian Bursary, competed at the Prix de Lausanne, Switzerland, competed at the Genee Medals Competition in Toronto, gained 97% in his RAD Advanced 2 Examination and graduated from ADPI with the Advanced Diploma of Art (Dance Performance) and an OP2 Equivalent.
Unfortunately, Rhys's performing career ended due to reoccuring injury, however his love of dance has continued. Rhys has great knowledge and has investigated conditioning, body alignment and stretching programs to help young dancers gain the best they can from their individual bodies. He started teaching at Brisbane Dance Centre in 2014, where great improvement was seen in the students in their line, focus and work ethic. They developed a great interest in their dance and showed an increase in commitment and their desire to achieve .

> Anna Veretennikova : Classical Ballet

Teaching Area: Classical Ballet
Anna trained with Valeria Hansen in Rockhampton before undertaking full time classical studies with Scully Borovansky - Nellie Potts and Kathleen Daintree [Sydney] achieving her RAD Solo Seal. After receiving a scholarship, she moved overseas to commence training with the Centre de Danse Internationale de Rosella Hightower [Cannes]; undertook classes with Marika Bessobrasova, [Monte Carlos] and Raymond Franchetti and Gibert Mayer [Paris Opera]; Carolyn Carlson and Matt Mattox [Contemporary and Jazz studies Paris]
Her performance career began with The Ballets de Marseilles before taking up a contract for two years with Contemporary Company The Ballet Theatre - Joseph Russillo in Paris.
On her return to Australia, Anna performed with the Adelaide based company, Australian Dance Theatre under the directorship of Elizabeth Dalman. It was during this time that her love of teaching began and she became a senior teacher for Rex Reid at the newly formed Australian Dance Theatre School.
Also while in Adelaide , Anna performed in the South Australian Opera production of Die Fledermaus and was included on the teaching staff at the inception of the College of the Performing Arts.
In 1979 Anna moved to Melbourne where she was a faculty member of the Victorian College of the Arts, School of Dance for 7 years. Then in 1988 she decided to commence her own Dance School - Dance Partners, Albert Park.
Up until 2000 Anna was a senior teacher for the Tony Bartuccio Dance Centre and The Australian Conservatoire of Dance [Director; Christine Walsh AM] teaching the two genres of classical ballet and contemporary.
In 2003 Anna was appointed a Grades Examiner for the Royal Academy of Dance [RAD] and currently holds the status of RAD Tutor for both Teacher and Student Courses. Anna fulfills the rest of her busy year with freelance teaching and tutoring.

> Jacqui Cuny : Singing

Teaching Area: Vocal Coaching
Jacqui Cuny, BMus (Vocal Perf, Teaching), BA (Music, Drama ), fell in love with the theatre at the age of five and has been performing, directing, musically directing and teaching aspects of theatre for the last 35 years. A graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium in vocal performance and teaching and the University of Queensland in music and drama, she began her professional acting career with the Queensland Theatre Company in 1981 with roles in Annie and Somerset Maugham‟s The Circle.
Her career continued in Sydney with roles in Candide (1981) and the national tours of The Sound of Music (1983) and The Pirates of Penzance (1984), working with Philip Quast, Julie Anthony and Marina Prior before heading to her native England. There she spent five years treading the boards in Manchester, Birmingham and the West End in Pirates of Penzance, Jeanne and Starlight Express.
She wrote, recorded and toured with her first jazz-rock album Another Statistic in 1988 before returning to Sydney, where she was cast in the original productions of Buddy - the Buddy Holly Story, Return to the Forbidden Planet and Better Known as Bee.
Over the last 20 years she has continued performing and musically directing, involved in numerous community theatre shows including Oliver, Into the Woods, Miss Saigon, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Annie. More recently she has also moved into film, including How to Change in Nine Weeks in 2008, and Charge Over You, 2010, both shot in Brisbane.
In all that time, Jacqui has also poured her energies into teaching singing and training young people, within schools, colleges and conferences, both here and abroad. In London she taught for several years at the prestigious Arts Educational School and at the London Studio Centre - training actors and dancers for roles in the West End. Back in Australia she directed for five years for Hillsong College in Sydney before taking up positions at several private schools in Brisbane. She is passionate about the power of the voice as a tool for effective communication and brings her love and understanding of acting and authentic storytelling to her teaching of musical theatre.

> Ira Seidenstein : Acro and Silks

Teaching Area: Acro and Silks
Ira Seidenstein has been active in theatre since 1973 when he was directed in "A Midsummer Night's Dream" by his teacher Dr. Trudy Scott.Prior to that, Ira had various performance experiences as a youth, including in a U.S.Navy drill team at the beginning of his four years active duty. He has worked in over 120 live productions including circus, dance, opera.
His career as an actor, director, playwright and choreographer has also included overlapping experiences in tangential training such as Iyengar yoga teacher training, M.A. in Visual Performing Arts, PhD in Education, six years advanced training in the Suzuki Actor Training Method and, recently, 2 years training in Yoshikan Aikido. Throughout his career, Ira has kept working with his specialities such as mime, clown, commedia, circus, movement based theatre ('physical theatre') and Shakespeare.
Some of the Shakespeare plays Ira has either acted in and/or directed include; Hamlet, Richard III, Pericles, The Merchant of Venice, A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest, King Lear, Macbeth, Henry the Fifth, and Antony & Cleopatra.. He has also worked in or created numerous Shakespeare inspired/adapted works and the next is "A Night With Hamlet" for 28 actors in New Zealand.
Ira has also worked with plays by numerous other playwrights such as: Come Blown Your Horn (Neil Simon); The Suicide (Nikolai Erdman); Wit (Margaret Edson); My Life In Art (Andrew Cowie); Angels in America and Perestroika (Tony Kushner); The Keys To Heaven (August Strindberg); Creation (Peter Anderson), 3 contemporary Australian plays by Valentino Musico; as well as musicals such as; Chicago, Girl Crazy, The Music Man.
Much of Ira's work has included plays that he either wrote or co-devised with actors such as: A Girl's Guide to Hamlet; Howard and the Doctor; Double Arlecchino!! Trouble!; Artist in Exile... Requiem For Strindberg; A Play On Worlds; The Male Adored Bride; Eenie and Kazeenie Discover the Universe, Chaplin's Eye, If You Go Into The Woods (2010), A Night With Hamlet (2010).
In 2012 he created The Madness of King Lear, Just Clowning, and was involved with the Best of the Fringe winners of two categories - Ponydance (dance) as mentor, and Tumble Circus (circus) director of the final scenes. In 2012 Ira also performed in Slava's Snow Show in Europa. In 2013 Ira directed Antony & Cleopatra (uncut) with 18 actors, and, created Commedia Toto in Tuscany, Italy.
Ira has extensive experience in clown and clown theatre. He apprenticed the founder of the Ringling Clown College - Danny Chapman who was a circus master as well as a clown. Then Ira studied extensively at the Dell'arte School in California during the period when founder Carlo Mazzone-Clementi taught a small group every day. Ira then studied privately with master teachers of acrobatics, ballet, and Australian Knockabout (Clete Ball).
Ira's first foray into the circus was the three-ring Sarasota Show Folks Circus with 13 clowns and directed by the circus legend Karl Wallenda. Equally legendary Merle Evans was the Conductor with his 20-members band. The latest circus experience with Cirque du Soleil's show Corteo (2007) in which Ira was the first clown trained to alternate roles (playing both the White and the Dead clowns), he also was the tour teacher offering training in a wide range of subjects at the request of each artist. That included partner comic acrobatics, yoga, qi gong, tai chi, classical acting, and character development.
Currently Ira mentors a wide range of actors, performers and several companies including the Paris based Improfessionals, the Irish company Ponydance, and the Australian Crackup Sisters.

> Valerie Bayley : Classical ballet

Teaching Area: Classical Ballet
Valerie Bayley is Dual Examiner of the Royal Academy of Dance and holds their Advanced Teaching Diploma qualification. She has 40 years of teaching experience during which she has examined, taught and coached students and teachers nationally and internationally.
She has developed a vibrant and comprehensive syllabus for the younger child as an introduction to the wonderful world of dance. She has also designed a Teacher’s Enrichment Program for dedicated teachers who wish to continue their own journey in gaining the knowledge and experience to help them develop their own students into the best dancers possible.

> Lydia Melmeth : Classical & Contemporary ballet

Teaching Area: Classical & Contemporary Ballet
Lydia studied at BDC from 2007, progressed to ADPI and graduated with the Advanced Diploma of Art (Classical and Contemporary Dance) and her RAD Advanced 2. She was an integral member of all our Eisteddfod groups. She then moved to New York to dance with the Ajkun Ballet Company. After completing her travels with the Company, she gained a teaching position which she enjoyed immensely. She has now returned home and it is wonderful to be able to welcome her back to Australian Dance Performance Institute where all the knowledge and experience she has gained from her Brisbane Dance Centre, Australian Dance Performance Institute and New York teachers will be of such great benefit to our students.

> Royce Simms : Health and Fitness

Teaching Area: Dance Health Science, Cardio
Royce has been working in the health and fitness industry for over 15 years. Having played at the top level for the Canterbury Bulldogs in the NRL competition, he returned to Brisbane to continue his fitness career, with the expert knowledge and experience gained whilst training under some of Australia’s top fitness guru’s in Billy Johnston and former Olympic coach, Kelvin Giles. With a Fitness Leaders Diploma in Health and Fitness (Certificate III and IV), Royce also holds qualifications in structural and applied anatomy, lifestyle and wellness management, sports nutrition and weight loss/gain management. Royce also holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
